Using data and technology to support sustainable urban development and wellbeing – Ecocity Forum Lahti offers new perspectives from Finland and around the world

How is new technology harnessed to promote the wellbeing of the environment and people? On November 2, Ecocity Forum Lahti conference will present the latest digital and smart solutions for sustainable urban development. The conference is hosted by Lahti, the European Green Capital 2021, and can be followed live online.

CitiCaP-sovellusUtilisation of data is key to building the cities of the future. According to Alanus von Radecki, Dr.-Ing., one of the keynote speakers at Ecocity Forum, innovations based on open data will drive the development of cities into effective, smart and comfortable living environments.

Futurist, inventor, non-fiction author and composer Perttu Pölönen proclaims the importance of humanity in the digital age. Do we aim for greater efficiency or try to build a better world, Pölönen asks. Despite the dizzying pace of technological development, we should take a moment to consider how we want to see new solutions used.

Local solutions to global societal challenges

In addition to visionary keynote speakers, Ecocity Forum Lahti will explore sustainable innovations based on smart technology and digitalisation by the European Green Capital’s partners. The Nuora artificial intelligence solution developed by Fujitsu and South Karelia Social and Health Care District is an example of how data can be used to improve wellbeing. Nuora predicts social exclusion risk in young adults and helps in early intervention.

In addition to Fujitsu, Lahti’s partners include L&T, Vaisala, CGI and Sitowise. Businesses can use L&T’s Ympäristönetti web service for monitoring and reducing their waste streams. Vaisala will showcase how its instruments can improve the efficiency of biogas production and cut back emissions. IT service provider CGI also emphasises the importance of data. Data on environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) is gaining an increasingly important role alongside financial performance indicators. Sitowise will explore how cities can be developed to be more sustainable through the use of data.
