Green Capital Lahti supports environmental projects and innovations

The European Green Capital Lahti enables the implementation of environmental innovations and projects in the Lahti region. With funding, actors from all over the region are invited to make a shared Green Capital.

The projects to be funded must implement the themes of the Lahti – European Green Capital 2021 programme, which are carbon-neutral life, circular economy, participation, as well as nature and water. Support will be granted for projects that, for example, promote the protection of nature and waterways, increase the reuse of materials and raw materials, support people’s relationship with nature, involve local residents in the implementation of the Green Capital or increase people’s knowledge and capacity to live a carbon-neutral life.

The support of the Sustainable Lahti foundation, which is implementing the Green Capital Year, is granted to an individual project for up to EUR 30,000 and a maximum of 80% of the total project costs. Funding is granted for the environmental projects of associations, private entrepreneurs, educational institutions, municipal organisations and companies that are implemented in cooperation by at least two different actors.

The application process for project support will open on 15 May 2020 and operate on a continuous basis until the end of September 2021 or as long as the Green Capital programme has project funding remaining.

“We are looking for both small and large ideas to make the Green Capital year visible in the daily lives of the residents. In the evaluation, we emphasise the uniqueness and creativity of the idea, the opportunities for participation for people of different ages, and the impact on sustainable development. A good project is created by implementing it together with different parties”, says Programme Director Saara Vauramo.

The suitability of the applications for the Green Capital programme will be assessed by an evaluation team that will make a recommendation on funding to the Board of the Sustainable Lahti foundation. The foundation’s Board makes decisions on projects to be funded four times a year.
